Welcome to my blog

I’m not sticking to sports in retirement, but I’m not leaving it, either.
Politics? Only on the periphery. That’s a morass into which I choose not to get sucked. But even the periphery is fascinating and alarming enough.
Case in point: https://www.thedailybeast.com/new-poll-43-of-republicans-want-to-give-trump-the-power-to-shut-down-media
Obviously, Donald Trump’s attacks on the news media are in play here. (And yes, in my effort to stay unsucked from the morass, I acknowledge his supporters feel the “fake” media is getting what it deserves).
Many years ago, though, my former Albuquerque Journal colleague Dennis Latta related to me a conversation he’d had with a state legislator of his acquaintance — a man who believed journalists should be licensed by the state of New Mexico in the same fashion as are boxers, beauticians, undertakers, etc. etc. Write a story that doesn’t meet the state’s approval, no license. Either he hadn’t heard of the First Amendment or disagreed with it.
Another case in point: a tweet posted recently by Albuquerque native and Houston Astros star Alex Bregman, commenting on the President’s tweet commenting on LeBron James, questioning the NBA superstar’s intelligence.
“LeBron is an amazing role model and has helped so many people. Embarrassing that our Pres. would tweet this ... I’ll go back to sticking to sports. Sorry everybody”
First reply: “You just lost a fan alex.”
Second reply: “And gained a lot more in the process.”
Farther down: “We don’t pay to watch and hear your Liberal crap! We pay to watch you play baseball.”
Still farther: “Thank you Alex!”
This just in: our country is divided.
And now, back to sports — but not leaving the topic of Alex Bregman.
Based on what the Albuquerque Academy graduate has already accomplished at age 24, on his increasing power numbers and on his ability to deliver in the clutch and on the biggest stages, are we watching the beginnings of  a Hall of Fame career?  I believe so, given continued good health.
Best of luck, Alex.

  1. Social media has become both a blessing and a curse in our world. Anyone with an account can post an opinion, regardless of their knowledge or expertise on the subject.

As the famous or infamous orator Lavar Ball once opined, maybe more of us should just, “stay on our lane. “ Or as an even more renowned orator stated, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.”

The world would be a much better place if more of us would adhere to this advice.
